Glaze Aiven, Elven warrior maiden, Baroness, and wife of the Duke of Poldoon is, it is generally accepted, the most famous adventurer in the Kingdom. So great is her fame that she has her own official fan club, and to her legions of fans she is the ‘Mighty, Mighty Warrior Baroness’.
Baroness Glaze, thank you for agreeing to be interviewed by the Bereny Bugle.
Baroness Glaze: It’s a pleasure as always.
Q: You are, by your own claim, 'Bereny's Greatest Warrior'. Could you tell us of the mighty feats of heroism you've performed to justify such a claim, and to deserve the high level of fame you enjoy?
GA: There was a time when it appeared that most of the adventurers in the Kingdom met a nasty end. The early days of Mirrormane saw many adventurers dying. I started my career in that Dungeon and made my name there. Alas most of my colleagues who I travelled with also died after we ran into a marauding group of Ogre Lords. I held them off whilst the rest, I hoped, escaped. For months afterwards I adventured alone, meeting monsters others had only heard off. Any adventurers who came anywhere near to where I was inexplicably died, and I spent my time returning belongings to family and exploring the depths of Mirrormane.
Q: Is that when you acquired your other epithet, the Black Widow?
GA: In a way, yeah. The Black Widow Curse or 'The Curse' as it was known to those in Mirrormane. It was bizarre. Adventurers would be wandering around having no problem at all until they met me coming the other way, and then suddenly loads of glowing skeletons or something would turn up and kill them, whilst I killed the skeletons. It happened on numerous occasions. I had begun to think the Gods had a special thing on me.
Q: And after that?
GA: When Masterbone attacked Mirrormane multiple times I joined the fight against him, taking down his dragons when possible and even faced him in personal combat the 2nd time. Many of the early stories have now been lost to time but most recently, I helped to clear out two dirigibles, helped in killing King Slime and have defeated a Helltroops Unit on my own.
Q: You have also been accused of cashing in on your fame with Glazeco's licensed range of MMWB merchandise and the MMWB fan club which is very popular with the kingdom's youth.
GA: There has been no cashing in. Early on I set-
Q: Are you the sole owner of Glazeco?
GA: Ownership of Glazeco is something that we don’t discuss.
Q: How did the fan club get started? Did you decide to set it up?
GA: It was in discussion with Sunny Day Empire-
Q: How do you respond to charges that you are exploiting young and impressionable people?
GA: I don’t feel that I am exploiting the young or impressionable people. The young are inspired by 'the message' If others fail to capture their imagination then obviously their 'message' is flawed. I feel that I provide a goal for the young to aspire to.
Q: Your marriage to the Raven of Poldoon has been one of the great love stories of our age. How did you first meet?
GA: There was some important function in which all the Barons etc were invited to. The Raven of Ghorst (as he was then) was one of the guests. He had heard of some of my exploits and expressed an interested in my coming along and telling him the stories in person.
Q: Given that you are both people of ... strongly held opinion ... how do you manage to get along together?
GA: Well we don’t really discuss our opinions when together. We mostly know each others views and we express them separately. I know at times he has wished me to be more 'diplomatic' in my views but that is not what I am like and he knows that.
Q: You have been very critical of those vampires who are trying to be accepted by Berenian society. Why do you object to them so strongly?
GA: Vampires are a scourge that should not be allowed to flourish. They even have to feed on humanoids to stay 'alive' and most prefer to use normal adventurers and the local populace. Once a monster always a monster. Personally I just think its a really bad idea to accept them into normal society.
Q: But you yourself have died twice and have been returned to life, in both cases by rather suspect means. Some would say that this makes you undead as well.
GA: Death is a very subjective term. I have never actually died but have been very close to death. I have never passed beyond. If I am an undead I am very healthy looking undead don’t you think?
Q: What about centaurs? What have you got against centaurs?
GA: Centaurs are a mistake of magic. They are not a creature of nature and were not brought about by the Six. As such I don’t see why we should allow them to roam around freely. I have also never actually fought with a centaur and until I see with my own eyes what good they can do I will not find them worthy.
Q: The Centaur Council has been foremost in organising the expedition to Kreskin'Lal's Tower. If they succeed in finding a cure for the Elven curse, then surely the elven race will owe them a deep debt of gratitude?
GA: Perhaps, but if they really cared for the elven race they would have accepted my request to join them on this mission. They might even have managed to change my views on them in the process. It was rejected outright. It seems odd to me that they would not willingly accept the service of another.
If they do find a cure and the male elves become strong again I would see that as a great boon to the elven race. We always need more warriors in our fight against those that would encroach on our lands. I am sure many females of our race wish to become scholars as opposed to warriors.
Q: So no centaur figures will be getting released in the MMWB action figure range
then I assume -
GA: <laughs>. If there is a demand who knows, but I sincerely doubt it.
Q: Actually some have suggested that you yourself would make the best commander for the PBS. Have you suggested it to your husband?
GA: Yes I have heard this and have indeed pondered the question myself. It would be logical but I can assume that many of those in the PBS would not be pleased. But I am sure I could have a lot of fun with that kind of position <laughs>. I have been asked actually not to apply. I guess the command structure would not work with myself involved.
Q: Anyone else you feel adversely disposed towards? Dwarves? Goblins? Leprechauns?
GA: Each race has merits and I admire many. Each race also has it disappointments
-
Q: Do you feel at all hurt by the current outbreak of support in Poldoon for the restoration of Duchess Arianne, given that the protesters' antipathy seems to be focused largely on you rather than your husband.
GA: I have no real feeling on that, as I’ve not seen anything on the streets of Poldoon. But the people who are complaining aren’t the populace of Poldoon. I know who is behind it and basically it is a handful of agitators who just like stirring trouble.
Q: And finally, what new challenges await 'Bereny's Greatest Warrior' in the future? New monsters to slay, or family and children?
GA: Who knows, You can never fully tell what is going to happen. Of course I want children and hope one day to have a large family, and maybe if my sister Siriah finally persuades that druid then maybe I can have a niece or nephew too.
