CONCERN GROWS OVER DERWENTIAN REFUGEE CAMPS

Dateline: 21-12-515

Concern has been voiced in a number of quarters over the apparent autonomy of the Derwentian refugee camps in western Moonward, and their lack of accountability to the local Berenian authorities.

The two large camps are each easily the size of a small town and are home to several hundred Derwentians. They were established four years ago after refugees from Derwent began pouring into western Bereny to escape famine and pestilence in their own country. On the direct order of the Regent they have always been under the control of the Derwentian authorities, and Berenian citizens have been denied entry - a policy which has been highly controversial

The secrecy of the Derwentian authorities regarding what goes on within the camps has lead to many wild rumours and fears. The Elvish and Dwarven communities have always been particularly incensed that the Derwentians have been allowed to maintain their practise of enslaving Dwarves and Elves, and ensuring the obedience of these slaves through mutilation and the use of drugs, and have accused the Crown authorities of turning a blind eye to the continuation of such practises within the camps. Our reporter has seen many of the mutilated dwarves known as Lobos among the Derwentian soldiers around the camps.

With many Derwentians now starting to return to their own lands, there were reports that the camps would now be opened up. However, when one of our reporters tried to gain entry he was turned back by guards in Derwentian uniforms. “We are under orders to only allow Derwentians into the camp”, one of the Guards told him.

Tensions have increased still further with the recent deployment of substantial Derwentian military forces outside the camps, many of them Lobos. The official Derwentian envoy, Sybil Malgrave Riven, has claimed that they are only there to help protect the camps from attack by the Goblin invaders, and that they are allied with and will co-operate with Crown forces in the area. However there presence has caused much disquiet in the region, and there have been several reports of clashes between Derwent units and militia from the nearby d'Agrillac estates, leading to fatalities on both sides.

The official line from a Crown is that the matter of the Derwentian refugees is being monitored and discussed regularly by the courts and by the various nobles involved in the process. But with the camps remaining closed to investigation, concern is growing that they pose a threat not only to Bereny's sovereignty, but even its security.

MORE EVIL CENTAUR ATTACKS REPORTED FROM HOMEWARD

Dateline: 26-12-515

Further attacks by the Evil Centaurs which have been terrorising Homeward have been reported from the area around Lionel. In the latest outrage a pioneer of manned balloon aviation has been killed.

Hawkeye was a hot air balloon aviator who competed in the Great Crownheart to Lionel Balloon Race two years ago, although he did not finish the race due to technical difficulties. He had recently been using his flying contrivance, named The Teddy Hangman, to look out for the centaur raiders on behalf of the local business community. Unfortunately for him, it seems to have attracted the wrath of the centaurs.

“Around dusk we heard a tremendous noise like a very deep raspberry,” said Ebeneezer Berry, manager of the Homeward Fruit Farmers Council trade post north of Lionel. “At first I thought some of the lads must have disregarded the warnings against eating those over-ripe plums, but then I realised that it was coming from outside - from beyond the hill where we’d seen Mr Hawkeye’s balloon earlier. We didn’t dare go out ‘till morning, but when we did - it were a terrible sight. The balloon was lying in a heap, all deflated and shot full of arrows, and underneath it all we found poor Mr Hawkeye. He hadn’t stood a chance. There is no doubt it were them Black Centaurs what did it - we all recognised their arrows”

Travellers on the roads in the vicinity of Lionel are warned to be on guard against attack from these dangerous Centaurs.

THE RAVEN AND GLAZE MARRY IN SECRET

Dateline: 1-1-516

It has been reported that the Raven of Poldoon and Glaze Fierein have been married in a private and very secret ceremony in Poldoon. Our reporter has learned from a source close to Baroness Fierien that they took the opportunity of her arrival in Poldoon and the relative security that has been achieved recently to finally tie the knot.

The Bugle’s source, who asked to remain anonymous, claims that the ceremony consisted of only a few close friends and family and, although understated for a couple of their great prominence, was a very moving affair. The ceremony took place in the the private chapel of the Ducal mansion, and was conducted by High Priest Morgut. It was said among the guests that no one had ever seen Glaze appear happier than when the High Priest pronounced them as Man and Wife.

Rumours had been circulating amongst the population of Poldoon that something was going on when it was reported that the Regent Dirk Steadfast and his wife Juliette were present in the city, along with High Priest Morgut and his wife Sunny. Although the City authorities refused to comment on the rumours, they now appear to have been confirmed.

It is believed that her forthcoming marriage may be the cause of the uncharacteristically cautious approach that the ‘Mighty Mighty Warrior Baroness’ has adopted in taking on the Goblin forces near the city. Although many expected her to immediately set off in pursuit of King Slime after he ran into the Forest, Glaze has instead been checking out the grounded Goblin Dirigible in which many adventurers lost their lives earlier, and has been seen climbing into and down from it whilst carrying a bow, something almost unheard of in her adventuring career before now.

This secret marriage has confounded many seasoned Glaze-watchers who had expected a lavish state wedding in Poldoon later this year. A statement from the Glazeco Offices of Poldoon said that there was indeed a lavish party held at the Ducal mansion in Poldoon to mark the end of the siege and the start of the New Year, but refused to comment on the rumours of the marriage.

‘THE MOTHER OF ALL DUNGEONS’

Dateline: 6-1-516

A vast network of unexplored caverns and excavations has been discovered beneath Frostward. The full extent of this previously unknown dungeon has not yet been determined, but from early reports it may be the largest such in Bereny.

The dungeon was discovered by a band of dwarves who stumbled upon it by chance. “Initially they thought that they must have made their way into the Underworld, so vast was the network of cave that they found,” a Crown spokesperson told The Bugle. “When they reported it to us they called it The Mother Of All Dungeons, but we have taken to abbreviating it to simply ‘Mother’.”

Already word of this new underground labyrinth has spread, and attracted adventurers and fortune-seekers to the area. Although some are seasoned veterans of the dangerous business of venturing into the subterranean world, others are untried newcomers to the profession, attracted by the hope that the spoils in this previously unexplored area will be great.

A small encampment of adventurers and their various hangers-on has sprung up by the roadside on the main road between White Citadel and Wintred, close to where the dungeon is reputed to lie, as they search for a way in.

As yet the origins of these caves, and the nature and disposition of any monsters that may be inhabiting them, remains unknown. The Crown has not yet announced whether it has any plans to set up a protected courtyard area within ‘Mother’, as it has historically done when other such dungeon complexes have been discovered around Bereny.
