THE KING STRIKES BACK

Dateline: 22-4-517

Adventurers gather around Crownheart’s City gate, waiting for the signal to attack.

Confirmation that King Dirk has indeed returned to Crownheart to lead the defence of the city against the demon army besieging it came when he personally lead a counterattack from the city against the Helltroop hordes.

“We are certainly in need of brave men and women to fight these demons,” the King told a cheering crowd of onlookers just inside the city gate before leading his attack. “That is why I am here. Where else should the King be, when his capital is threatened?”

The Bugle has learned however that many of the King’s closest advisors, mindful of Lord Lexor’s direct threat again his Majesty’s person, were unhappy with the King exposing himself to danger in such a manner, fearing that the demon hordes might concentrate their malice on him and overwhelm him with their sheer numbers.

An initial sally from the city was joined by a large contingent of adventurers from the Underworld who used the portal from White Tower Island to Crownheart to take the demons by surprise. Then, at a signal from the King, all the Crown forces retreated in an orderly manner back within the city gates, leaving dozens of the demons dead on the ground outside.

Emboldened by his success, the King launched a renewed attack, and Crownheart’s defenders again took the fight to the Demons. In the ensuing pitch battle hundreds of the demonic Helltroops were slain. But sadly Berenian forces also suffered some casualties.

Among them were Askhara Noor, a priest of the Six, and Sir Malevolent Jaundice, Knight of the Order of the Rose and a personal retainer of Queen Juliette.

Paying tribute to him, the Queen described him as a veteran of numerous campaigns and perilous adventures, who had fought with the King before against the Reaper. “He would be content that his end came whilst shoulder-to-shoulder with his hero-King and protecting Crownheart. We could have wished for no more staunch a defender and his name will stand high on the list of Bereny's most glorious, now an honoured hero himself.”

King Dirk added his personal commendation of the fallen knight. “Sir Jaundice laid down his life in defence of the capital, and deserves the very highest of honours. He will be remembered.”

Although the King and his followers have now slain all the Helltroops that were immediately around the city, at least three separate hosts of the creatures are reported to be roaming the city’s suburbs, so the battle is by no means over. However there are also reports that Baroness Glaze Aiven, reputedly Bereny’s greatest warrior, has been seen in the city, and may shortly be joining the battle.
