WHITE TOWER GETS A ROYAL MAKEOVER

Dateline: 20-4-517

King Dirk has announced that the past misdeeds of the White Tower are to be expunged from the official record, leaving its formal Crown history as a Guild untainted by any record of demon worship or treason against the Kingdom.

“In light of recent actions taken by the White Tower in support of the Crown, I am ordering these past misdeeds expunged from the official record”, the King announced. “The White Tower may consider its atonement made in full, and should be judged now solely upon its achievements of recent years - which are considerable.”

The White Tower, or The Order of the Knights of the Rose to give it its formal name, was founded in the time of King Lionel specifically as a political counter against what some saw as the excessive power exercised through the Crusading Orders by the Church. It has therefore long been regarded with suspicion by the Church, and their worst fears seemed to be confirmed when, about a century after its foundation, a secret demon-worshipping conspiracy known as the Black Codex was unmasked within the organisation. After bitter fighting within the Order between knights loyal to the Crown and those corrupted by the Demons, the Black Codex was suppressed, but the reputation of the White Tower was left permanently tainted in the eyes of many, and by Royal decree the Order was dissolved.

It was Baron Ephraim Stryker, a descendent of the White Tower’s original founder, who persuaded King Mark III to re-instate the Order. Since then the White Tower has grown in strength and influence, in particular being responsible for founding White Tower Island, the Kingdom’s outpost in the Underworld.

Baron Stryker, who is absent from Bereny as the Kingdom’s ambassador to the Empire of Kyr, sent his thanks for the Royal announcement. “Words cannot express my personal and our broader Guild gratitude for this statement and all that it means.”

“Whilst we have striven for years to understand and alleviate the historical blight on our Order,” the Baron continued, “it has never been with a goal such as this in mind. We will further our endeavours to uncover the truth of those long ago events, to ensure that the events that led to the fall are not repeated.”

Although the White Tower officially denies that the Black Codex is still in existence, a recent incident at Swinderlog suggests that it is. Six armoured knights burst into the Courtyard, apparently trying to reach the Portal to White Tower Island. They were defeated by White Tower forces, but examination of their bodies suggested that they may have been some sort of undead. There are also persistent rumours that since the Order re-discovered the ruins of the original White Tower at Swinderlog, they have discovered some very strange things lurking beneath its ruins.
