GENERAL GOUT KILLED IN PENDLETON KEEP

Dateline: 13-11-517

The Bereny Bugle has learned that Baron Elderon Gout, Commanding General of the Bereny Eagle Elite Fighters, has been killed by monsters in Pendleton Keep. Although there has been no public statement from BEEF, the news has been released to members of the Eagles, who have been left deeply shocked by it.

Originally a gnome, the General’s triumph over personal disability was an inspiration to many.

Elderon Gout first came to prominence in BEEF and among the adventuring community in general as the Eagle’s Captain in Hasjan, where he attempted to bring to an end the reign of fear of the terrorist enchanter Mancdamon Zorachus. Shortly thereafter he first became BEEF’s representative to the Council of Guilds, and then assumed the position of Commanding General.

However his new position did not protect him from the wrath of Zorachus and his minions from the heretical Church of the Holy Light. Shortly thereafter, while resting in Hasjan courtyard, the general was subjected without warning to a overwhelming sorcerous attack which left him mortally wounded. That one of Bereny’s most famous gnomes should be struck down in this manner so infuriated the Gnome King that he ordered his personal artificers to spare no effort to save General Gout, but in the end they were only able to save his brain, which they preserved alive within a jar.

Although there were those in the Church who questioned the ethics of him being maintained alive in this state, the General himself did not allow the profound disability of being a brain in a jar to interfere with his personal quest to fight evil, and after the master artificers of the gnomes equipped his jar with suitable appendages and magical locomotion, he returned to his duties as leader of the Eagles.

The General subsequently played his part in commanding the Eagles during the Reaper crisis and the Goblin War, while finding time to explore further in Hasjan and latterly in Pendleton Keep. In 515 he was granted a Barony by the Regent in recognition of his work in leading the Eagles through recent times.

His death is the latest tragedy to strike the Eagles, who have lost a number of their senior officers recently, and raises the question of who should succeed him. Some have suggested that Baroness Calista Sureshot, Marshal of the Eagles and a former commander, may resume command. Another likely candidate is Major Laurelin Aiglenoir, the elven warrior most famous as the slayer of the Demon princess Jennata.
