SIEGE OF POLDOON LIFTED

Dateline: 2-12-515

The BAR commander at Poldoon, Baroness Farissa de'Torfane, has declared that the siege of the city of Poldoon by the goblin army of King Slime has been lifted.

Crown forces are firmly in control of the Goblin’s Massive Weapon of Destruction. Although one Goblin Behemoth remains at large, most have now been hunted down and destroyed, and a huge convoy of supply wagons is approaching Poldoon from the SW. And most significantly for the morale of the people of the city, Baroness Glaze Fierien has arrived at Poldoon.

A excited crowd of citizens joined the soldiers defending the city walls to cheer the Baroness, who will become Duchess of Poldoon on her forthcoming marriage to Duke Raven. Addressing the defenders, the Baroness said “I thank you greatly for your efforts. Now however the tide turns. I have finally arrived and now the goblins will be defeated. This 'King' Slime and his minions have put the beautiful city of Poldoon and its new Duke into danger and I will make them pay. Nothing will stop me and nothing will deter me. Deliver the message - death has arrived!”

The battle is not yet over though. The grounded dirigible remains in goblin hands, and King Slime is still in the area. Those who have seen the Goblin King have commented that there is something very odd about his appearance - they note in particular his bulging bloodshot eyes - “Like he is diseased or poisoned,” commented one eyewitness.

“I hit King Slime with a fireball, killing his goblin escort and singeing him. He appears to be making a run for it,” reported Baroness Belanna Marluk, who has been singled out for praise by Baroness Glaze for seizing and holding the goblin’s MWD.

“From my perspective our position is fairly secure at the moment,” Baroness Farissa announced. “It appears that supplies will reach the city tomorrow. Reinforcements are currently en route and my estimate is 4-5 days for them to travel to the city. I will deal with the other behemoth that has broken through our lines tomorrow. One feels that one can declare the siege of Poldoon successfully raised at this point.”

One anomoly however is the giant wooden horse that the Goblins wheeled out to the edge of the forest NE of Poldoon during the siege. This enormous structure, at least forty feet tall, is reported to be filled with goblins, but it is not clear what the goblins hoped to achieve with it. One suggested theory is that the goblins hoped that the defenders might wheel it into the city and its occupants could then swarm out, but it is difficult to imagine that the Raven would allow something so foolish to occur. A more likely explanation is that it is an elaborate siege tower and that the intention was that the goblin behemoths would push it up to the walls of the city, protecting the goblin grunts within from the missiles of the defenders. Whatever its use was to have been, it and its occupants are now looking dangerously exposed.

SPLIT IN WAY OF THE FIVE PATHS AS DEPUTY LEADER EXPELLED

Dateline: 9-12-515

The Bereny Bugle can reveal that there has been a serious rift in the leadership of the Way of the Five Paths Guild over the decision by its Deputy Leader, Lady Abbi Selas, to campaign for a ban on unholy symbols of Relm, which has resulted in Lady Abbi being first demoted from the leadership, then expelled from the Guild.

The Guild also faces accusations of idolatry over its worship of a teddy bear called ‘Mr Huggies’. One former member, Ted Hang Man, has denounced the practise as blasphemous and said that teddy bears are evil symbols of dark powers. Guild leader Lady Clarissa Stormpath has responded “There is nothing wrong with teddy bears - Mr Huggies just like to be warm in bed, and he get hurt by those rude comments.” The Guild is now reported to be trying to hunt down Ted Hang Man.

The Guild has also been trying to put its past associations with the demon-worshipping DNA behind it, although Royal Court records clearly indicate that it inherited its Guildhouses from the DNA after that Guild was outlawed.

Although the Wot5P has a stated official policy of not allowing its members to use symbols of the Dark gods (in which it was well ahead of many other Guilds), Lady Abbi’s campaign is said to have angered Lady Clarissa as it again raises the long-running (though never substantiated) accusation that the Guild was associated with demon-worship.

However despite its official denials the Bereny Bugle can reveal that one of its reporters has seen an adventurer wearing both the distinctive pink leggings and multi-coloured cloak of the Wot5P, and an unholy symbol of Relm.

The issue seems to have come to a head this week with a blazing row between Lady Abbi and Lady Clarissa involving a rubber mallet in one of the Guildhouses, which culminated with Lady Abbi being physically ejected from the Guildhouse.

“Lady Stormpath gets the guards to chuck Lady Selas out the guildhouse and tells her not to come back”, said one eyewitness. “Lady Selas ends up standing outside the guildhouse shaking her fist and swearing by the Six to show the Way of the Five Paths that the Gods had plans for her. Then she was seen teleporting to Icehaunt. Her face was like thunder - I`d hate to be the one who gets in her way.”

REGENT ACTS ON EVIL SYMBOLS

Dateline: 14-12-515

Dirk Steadfast, the Regent of Bereny, has issued a proclamation banning the public display of the so-called unholy symbols of the evil god Relm, the Master of Greed, in response to a widespread public outcry

The Royal edict bans not only Relm symbols, but any symbols or insignias of the Goblins of the North, the Antithetical Church, or the Dark Gods of the Antithesis, on the grounds that such public displays are seditious and likely to damage morale and embolden the enemy. Specific allowance is made for adventurers who acquire such items in the course of their adventures, providing that they do not wear or make public display of the items.

A second edict prohibits the possession of “all materials of propaganda value” to the same enemies of Bereny, specifying any books, pamphlets, papers, or inscribed items promoting or giving praise to King Slime, the Antithetical Church, and the demonic Dark Gods. Anyone who inadvertently picks up such an item must either discard or destroy it no later than sunset of the following day to avoid being subject to this edict.

The Way of The Five Paths Guild, from which has originated the most vocal calls for Relm symbols to be banned, has recently published a list of such items known to be used by certain unscrupulous adventurers, which in addition to the Relm symbols includes:

- Red Cloth Strips inscribed with an incantation calling on the evil goddess Nashan to grant unlife to the wearer.

- Cursed Chains of Drax.

- Red Linen Sashes inscribed with an protective incantation to the ‘Six Lords of the Antithesis'.

The Regent has asked that Adventurers observing any individual to be in violation of the Royal edicts should report the matter to the Office of the Regent and the Royal Courts. However it is not clear what the sanctions that will be applied to anyone discovered to be breaking the edicts are to be.

DISASTER STRIKES DWARVEN KINGDOM

Dateline: 13-12-515

Word has reached Bereny that the Dwarven realm of Caldor, the largest and most powerful friendly kingdom to exist in the lands that lie beneath Bereny, has been overwhelmed and destroyed by an as yet unidentified enemy.

Survivors from this conflict have begun to stumble into the surface world, and to the edge of the White Tower Island in the Underworld, desperate for aid and sanctuary. “These guys look terrible,” one eyewitness told the Bugle. “Clearly something has given them a terrible beating. They are lucky to be alive.”

Caldor has been increasingly retreating from contract with the surface world for several decades and has had only sporadic diplomatic contact with Bereny. The news that they have fought and lost a desperate war deep beneath the earth has come as a shock to the Kingdom of Bereny.

There is uncertainty as to the fate of the King of the Dwarves, Habble Silverhall, a confirmed and long-standing ally of Bereny. There are conflicting rumours that he is dead, or that he yet survives and is making a last stand against his enemies, holed up somewhere within Caldor.

Baron Ephraim Stryker, the Lord Commander of the White Tower has called for volunteers to mount an expedition from White Tower Island to bring aid to the Dwarves and try and rescue their King. “An ally of the Kingdom of Bereny stands at peril,” said the Baron in his statement. “Now comes the hour we must respond in force. This will not be a task for the inexperienced nor the faint at heart. The White Tower will take the initial lead but will stand ready to enter a coalition of Guilds, factions and individuals to best achieve our goal.”

Gimli Ruddle, the High Elder of the Runeforge Guild, and the de facto leader of the many dwarves who live as citizens of Bereny, told the Bugle, “This news is of great interest to The Runeforge, especially as we are a guild of Dwarves. The Runeforge is more than keen to visit the home of its forefathers and discover the fate of the Dwarf King. I am sure that many members of my guild would be more than willing to give a hand. I will personally give my axe in service."

The Expeditionary force is assembling at White Tower Island, Bereny’s outpost in the Underworld.
