YOU MAY HAVE MISSED…
The Bereny Bugle was not published for a year from Leoth 519 as a result of a tax
dispute with the Lord Crusader of Merl. Here is the opportunity to catch up on some
of the news headlines we missed out on publishing.
- King Dirk's efforts to repair the Weave continued. Having succeeded in taking the
Godstone from a chamber beneath Safe Haven, the King, accompanied by a select group
of adventurers, is now seeking a means of infusing its power into the Weave. This
Royal mission to 'save the world' has ascended a ladder into the sky in SW Bereny
rumoured to lead to a portal to the Land of the Fae. Meanwhile there have been strange
happenings and the appearance of weird monsters in the vicinity.
- The Royal Edict forbidding teleportation magic remains in force. It has been reported
that some of those who disregarded the ban have disappeared.
- The Raven, Duke of Poldoon, has disappeared. Shortly after, numerous Poldoon city
guards were slain by hideous tentacular creatures which emerged from the deep city
sewers. The Poldoon Border Scouts have been dispatched into the sewers to investigate.
- Not long after receiving an official visit to his domain from the King, the Vampire
Count Vladimir Tepes was assassinated by a group of visiting Berenians, rumoured
to have been lead by veteran rogue crusader and vampire hunter Sophia Shagwell.
- The religious order Dei Vigilare has declared itself to be at war against all vampires,
although their activities have largely been confined to vampires outside the jurisdiction
of the Crown. Baroness Glaze Fierien has also declared a personal war against all
vampires (though there has been in return a call for Glaze to be killed from sympathisers
with the vampire cause). King Dirk has explicitly placed those vampires in his retinue
under his protection.
- Rumours persist of mass vampire 'conversion' sessions taking place throughout the
Kingdom. An individual calling himself the 'King's Herald', presumed to be a vampire,
has called on vampires to go out and 'convert the masses'. The Vampire Council has
denied any links to this movement. Vampire attacks have been steadily increasing,
even in the heart of the Kingdom.
- Following the destruction of Lord Lexor, the intensity of undead assaults on Moonward
tailed off, and it appears that the Cold Lich Kings have been defeated.
- Following the efforts of the Crusading orders and their allies to track them down
and destroy them, there have been no new reports of plasmaise sightings other than
in the immediate vicinity of Castle Kainen itself. It looks as if this threat too
has been defeated.
- The influence of the White Tower continues to increase in the Kingdom, as its Lord
Commander Ephraim Stryker, who has returned to Bereny after his stint as Ambassador
to Kyr, asks the King for a Dukedom, and gets one. He is made Duke of Mor Kas Ah,
an Underworld realm which is not actually part of Bereny, although he pledges to
conquer it on the Kingdom’s behalf.
- The rebellious noble Uryen D'Agrillac was finally tracked down and killed by a force
of knights from the Red Codex of the White Tower. The same Red Codex strikeforce
also attacked and captured an estate near Drax being held against the Crown by Darkwalkers.
- A deadly new drug known as ‘Mindbender’ has hit the streets of some of Bereny's largest
cities, inducing violent behaviour in those that take it. The two cities with the
worst problems are Wintred and Merrywell. The Crown authorities are trying to locate
- and stop - the source.
- A number of members of the Red Mountain Keep Guard, including its commander Jonathan
Sevenlimes, were arrested on charges of corruption, racketeering and murder.
- A new guild for Bards & other adventurers of a musical inclination, the Minstrels
of Valour, has been launched by famed minstrel Jackanory. It is seeking full recognition
as an official Crown-approved guild.
- During Earnath the sight of a fully-grown flare dragon circling the skies over Crownheart
caused some consternation. Fortunately the creature proved to not be hostile.
- Veteran Crusader Lord Ismay Shepherd retired after serving many years as the Lord
Crusader of Cambron. Another retiree was High Priest Morgut, who announced that he
was withdrawing from public life to spend more time with his family. No replacement
has yet been appointed to the office of High Priest.
- Finally, the Bereny Bugle has been making the news itself. The Office of the Lord
Crusader of Merl issued an order freezing the assets of the Bereny Bugle over allegations
of unpaid taxes, effectively forcing the Bugle to cease publication.
- Following allegations that Bereny Bugle reporters used magical means to improperly
intercept messages being transferred by magical summoning - the so-called 'wisp-hacking'
scandal - editor-in-chief Rebekah Seyke was summoned to appear before the Crown Commission
for Ethical Practise in the Press (CREPP). No reliable evidence of any wrongdoing
by the Bugle could be placed before the Commission.
