TRADERS GET A BUMPY RIDE ON KINGDOM’S ROADS

By Crabb Robinson, Crownheart Correspondant

Dateline: 16-6-518

There is growing dissatisfaction in the Kingdom with the lack of priority being given by the Crown to keeping Bereny’s road network in a safe and operable state.

On the Kingdom’s principle artery of commerce - the road from Crownheart to Lionel - huge sections remain blasted and impassible after being burnt by the toxic slime of the demonic Helltroops that besieged Crownheart last year. Almost five leagues worth of road surface has been destroyed.

Meanwhile in Summerward there are reports that over four years since it was partially destroyed in the battle with the Reaper, the main road from Hasjan to Ghorst has also never been repaired.

“Neither the King's advisors nor the Terin’sha could come up with any known way to remove or remedy the scorching of the land around Crownheart,” a Crown official told me. “The land has been rendered cursed and lifeless and even the power of Shanna is unable to remedy this. Under the circumstances, there may be a real risk to any work-gangs sent to repair the road where it crosses the blasted land. And at the minute it simply isn’t safe to send work-gangs to some of the remoter corners of the Kingdom. A number have disappeared recently you know.”

The people most affected by the deterioration of the road network are the Kingdom’s traders, but Mistress Issella Ubiya, Administrator of the Independent Traders of Bereny Association, was philosophical about the difficulties. “The Kingdom has been hard pressed of late by a constant stream of threats to its very existence. While it is a shame the kingdom's roadways have been damaged by these events to the extent as to slow commerce, these threats will no doubt take away much more should the Kingdom not make them a priority over other matters”.

“Certainly, for the economy of the Kingdom to continue to support the forces of the Kingdom in battling these threats, some consideration for infrastructure must be made, but I am confident the King and his staff are keeping such matters in mind when the opportunity presents.”

“Also note, that the Dwarven Corp of Engineers working for the Kingdom have not been idle these past few years. Look at the new roads bridging the gap around Swinderlog Swamp from Lionel to Poldoon and King Mark's Road shortening the journey from Moonwalk Road to Jobollah. No doubt these roads will open up new avenues of trade that any merchant worth the salt he transports can take advantages of.”
