KYRIANS PREPARE TO WELCOME BARON STRYKER

Dateline: 26-3-517

News has been received from Kyr that Baron Ephraim Stryker, Lord Commander of the White Tower and Bereny’s ambassador to the Empire, will shortly be arriving at the Kyrian capital, the City of Splendours, after a long, arduous and dangerous journey through Poldoon Pass and across the parched deserts of Kyr.

“I am finding the conditions in Kyr different from those in Bereny but pleasant in their own way”, Baron Stryker told the Bugle. “I and my retinue are some distance west of the City of Splendours and should soon enter the capital to establish the Embassy envisioned by our King.”

In a very positive development, the Baron has now received word from Mustapha Jihad, Ra'is of the City of Splendours, a rank approximately equivalent to a Berenian Duke. “I am delighted to hear that your journey has been successful,” the Ra’is is reported to have told Stryker. “I shall ensure the arrangements are in place for your arrival. The concubines have been put on high alert.”

The Ra’is is also reported to be favourably disposed to the idea of the Baron establishing an embassy in the city, and has even set aside what he describes as ‘a suitable building for your purposes’.

All this is in contrast to the distinctly lukewarm reception from the Ra’is of Rasaiad, who seemed to some of the Baron’s entourage to be hostile to the prospect of a Berenian embassy.

The Baron has sent his thanks to the Ra’is and expressed his desire to learn more of Kyrian ways. “Hopefully my unfamiliarity with your customs will not cause unintended complications,” he added.

The Baron has not yet announced whether he will seek an audience with Kyr’s Empress when he is in the city. Although theoretically Kyr’s absolute ruler, the Empress Sulesse is thought by many outsiders to be little more than a figurehead for Kyr’s powerful nobility, and rarely appears in public.

So it may be that after centuries of isolation, hostility and war, Bereny may be on the verge of a new dawn in its relations with its eastern neighbour.
