UNDEAD THREAT TO MOONWARD CONTINUES

By Robert Capa, Torlia correspondent

Dateline: 26-02-519

In what many in northern Bereny feel to be a ‘forgotten war’, Moonward continues to be at threat from a mass invasion of undead emerging from the Great Forest. The attacks began nearly two years ago and continue on a daily basis.

The enemy consist mostly of large numbers of animated skeletal troops, but they are lead and directed by much more powerful ‘lich kings’. Opposing them are units of the Royal Army supported by adventurers, members of the White Tower and Dei Vigilare, and the militias and retinues of local estate barons.

The front of battle stretches all along the edge of the Great Forest from Torlia in the west to Joballah in the east. Each time Berenian forces achieve a local victory, word soon arrives of a fresh irruption of undead at some other point along the frontier.

What remains unknown is the source of the repeated attacks. No single focus or base of the attackers has been identified within the Great Forest. There is a belief among the staff of General MacMahon, the commander of the Royal Army in the North, that the monsters (or at least the lich kings) are arriving through magical portals, and that the power behind the invasion is the Lord Lexor who two years ago threatened to destroy Bereny. Lexor is also believed to have been behind the helltroop attacks on Crownheart, and if reports from the Walkers are correct, may himself be some sort of lich lord. It is of course the damage to the magical ‘weave’ caused by these portals that has lead to the Crown’s ban on the use of teleport magic.

The latest success against the undead comes from Kerak Falcone in the far north west of the Kingdom (or the Steadfast Estate as Baroness Sophia d’Agrillac now names it as a break from the area’s rebellious past). Baroness Sophia has announced that her estate forces have driven back an attack by the undead forces with minimal losses.

However as long as the attacks continue without respite, there is no hope of rebuilding the ruined city of Meadowbrook, abandoned since its destruction at the hands of King Slime’s goblins four years ago. The whole of Moonward is in danger of ceasing to be a safe and stable part of the Kingdom, and of becoming instead a dangerous, monster-haunted borderland.

The worst news however comes not from Moonward, but from the distant Brokenlands. Sources within the Royal Army command have told the Bugle that the Walkers-lead expedition into the Brokenlands to find and destroy Lexor at his base there have sent word that they have been driven back by the defenders of Castle Lexor, and do not now believe that they have enough forces to destroy Lexor in his lair without substantial reinforcements from Bereny. Reinforcements that are not on their way.
