CROWN LOOKS TO THE GODSTONE TO SAVE THE WEAVE

Dateline: 25-4-518

The ‘Iceball stick’ graph - but how reliable are its predictions of a collapse in the fabric of reality?

Reports are emerging that the deterioration of what is known as the ‘Weave’, the magical structure that separates our world from other dimensions, is much more serious than the recent statement from the Crown would suggest.

“A great deal of research has been funded in this area of late by the Raven of Ghorst - the Duke of Poldoon as he is now,” one expert told us.

“Every exercise of any sort of teleport magic, or any journey to extradimensional pockets like the Safe Haven, damages the Weave. Usually the Weave can heal itself and these are not a problem, but the sheer number of such events in recent years has increased the damage beyond its ability to heal itself.”

“The research sponsored by the Duke of Poldoon indicates that the integrity of the weave has been fairly constant for centuries, but in the last 20 years or so instability levels have shot up - it has become known in the arcane community as the ‘Iceball stick’ graph, after an its resemblance to the shape of an implement used in a sport popular in the South. If it is correct, the entire weave is now on the verge of collapsing completely.”

While the fate of the Weave may seem like a abstruse matter of the arcane sciences to ordinary people, recent events at Crownheart have shown the very real dangers of a weakening of the barriers between dimensions. And if that were not enough, then there is the Time of Thunder as a stark warning from history.

Although the Crown is trying to downplay the danger, it is rumoured that King Dirk has established a secret commission drawn from the most powerful mages in the Kingdom to search for a solution. And it looks like they may have found one.

“There is a theory that the damage could be repaired, if we had access to a sufficient source of energy,” the King’s magical adviser Lord Isander Whiteflame declared recently. “The amount of energy would have to be absolutely astronomical, however - far beyond any mundane source.”

“Baron Solas recently brought to my attention the discovery by a sadly deceased enchanter, Baron Axomin, of a room deep within the Safe Haven containing something called the Godstone, which is rumoured to contain the essence of a long-dead god. Since that sounds very much like a source of astronomical power, it's currently our main lead - the Godstone isn't a threat, as far as we know, but a potential solution to the problem.”

The King has now called for volunteers to seek out this Godstone in Safe Haven in the hope that its power can be harnessed, a mission he has described as being of “utmost importance to the Kingdom”.

Although there has been no shortage of volunteers, the problem is getting them to Safe Haven, an extra-dimensional space normally only accessible to mages. The new Royal Mage Lady Fea has been charged with finding a way to get the volunteers there, and the Warders Guild, which has developed ways for its members to reach Safe Haven, has also been called on to help.

However if the Godstone powers Safe Haven, this leaves unanswered the question of what will happen to Safe Haven if it is interfered with.
