IS BERENY LOOSING THE WAR OF THE LICH KINGS?

Dateline: 22-04-519

The continuing threat to Moonward from the ‘Cold Lich Kings’ and their legions of undead skeletal minions has lead to the abandonment of yet another of Bereny’s northern estates.

Gemma Darkayne, Baroness of the Darkayne Estate, has announced that she is evacuating the estate inhabitants as a direct result of the threat of the undead hordes. The Darkayne Estate lies on the edge of the Great Forest to the north-east of the Mines of Miasma and quite close to King Slime's Keep, and has been in the forefront of the conflict.

“It is with a heavy heart that I must confess that it was, indeed, the likelihood of further depredations by those terrible Cold Lich Kings from the Great Forest that made me give up the Darkayne Estate,” a clearly emotional Baroness Darkayne told the Bugle. “We are a prime target for those dreadful creatures here. My archers were ineffective against them, even with adventurer fireworks to help. My employees were fearful of the next incursion. It was bad enough to find the smoking corpses of my livestock strewn around the Castle, but when a brave passing adventurer druid called Tarka De Otta was also killed defending us, I thought enough was enough.”

“To all the fine folk who helped in the epic battle against the Cold Lich King - many thanks and farewell, as I give up the unequal struggle and return to the obscurity of life as a commoner. I shall be retiring on a small pension, kindly provided by Queen Juliette, to a little cottage in an inexpensive working-class quarter of Crownheart.”

Meanwhile the Bereny Bugle has heard rumours that the Crown’s forces may have suffered a further military disaster on the northern frontier. Royal Army High Command has heard nothing from a task force consisting of members of the Dei Vigilare guild and other adventurers lead by Crusader of Bethseline Maureen Palance, who were defending the strategically important Weir Bridge on the Great North Road near the ruins of Meadowbrook. It is feared that they may have been over-run and wiped out.

Other Crown units are also reported to have taken casualties, as if the undead assault is gathering momentum.

“No matter how many we destroy they just keep coming,” one defender told the Bugle. “The Dei Vigilare has a theory that the Lich Kings are not actually being slain. Each time they seemed to be destroyed, some sort of distortion force is felt by all nearby, and their remains simply vanish without a trace ... and without leaving their ancient broadswords, capes, or crowns behind ... not leaving anything behind at all. The DV think they might be some sort of necromatic summoning, and as soon as one is defeated, a replacement appears within a day or two. If it is true we have no way to defeat them!”

And if the rumours of Bereny’s losses are true, then the Kingdoms’s defences along the northern frontier may have reached breaking point.
