VAMPIRE-OCCUPIED VILLAGE REBELS AGAINST THE CROWN

Crown authorities in White Citadel have reported to the King that a village in Frostward is in a state of open insurrection against the Crown. And to make matters worse, the village appears to have been taken over by vampires.

The village is Korl, twelve miles north of White Citadel. That the situation seems to have come as a complete surprise to the authorities is being blamed on no-one from White Citadel having visited the village recently due to a combination of unseasonably severe weather in western Frostward, which has been going on for months, and travel restrictions which were put in place to reduce the risk of spreading the virulent snow plague which is afflicting the region. Privately, Crown officials have described the situation as a diplomatic disaster.

A letter delivered to the authorities in White Citadel claims that Korl has declared itself independent and “is leaving the control of the Kingdom of Bereny in order that its residents may live peacefully and without prejudice."

Nearby communities report that the village is in the process of being fortified, and that not all the inhabitants are vampires. Whether the human inhabitants are, as the letter from Korl claims, there of there own free will or whether they are being held as human ‘cattle’ to provide the vampires with a food source is not clear.

The Vampire Council was quick to deny any involvement in the insurrection, while simultaneously defending the actions at Korl. “Although we do not condone the actions taken by the citizens of Korl, we do sympathize with their sentiments to finally not be insulted, hunted down and killed whenever certain elements within the kingdom get the chance to do so,” said Vampire Council spokesman Solomon Kain, then went on to offer to have the Vampire Council mediate between the Crown and the rebels.

No such inclination to compromise was on display from the the White Tower, the Dei Vigilare or the Crusading orders of Shanna and Marial. Lord Crusader Faile has ordered all available Crusaders of Shanna to the area and has already said that they may attack without warning any vampire approaching the area who is not a member of the official Crown diplomatic mission. Lord Crusader Stella has ordered all Crusaders of Marial to ‘eradicate’ the rebels and has threatened to cast down any who fail to obey.

Duke Stryker has been vocal in urging a robust response by the Crown and is dispatching White Tower forces to the area. “I cannot see there is a greater threat currently to the integrity of the Kingdom, which increases the need for the response to be overwhelming to prevent this situation being replicated elsewhere,” he said.

On the other hand the Lord Crusaders of Seledor and Cambron have refrained from sending their Orders into the area, and the Lord Crusader of Merl has sparked outrage by suggesting that vampire occupation of Korl could be tolerated providing they continue to pay their taxes.

King Dirk has urged restraint while the Crown authorities seek a diplomatic solution. In a plea for moderation he said “The Crown is dispatching a diplomatic mission to Korl, albeit a well-armed and protected one. Turning the area into a war zone would make diplomacy difficult.”
