CHURCH AND STATE IN CONFLICT OVER VAMPIRES

Dateline: 14-10-518

The Crown has again expressed its desire that no aggressive or pre-emptive action should be taken against any vampire holding an adventuring licence by any citizen of Bereny. “There are enough vampires in the world that do not hold any licence from the Crown for those who wish to destroy them to act against without needing to seek confrontation with those Vampires who have accepted the laws of Bereny and do not seek to attack our citizens”, a Crown spokesperson told the Bugle. “This is the will of the King, and he should be very disappointed if any break his peace in this respect.”

This renewed pressure from the Crown to maintain the de facto pact that has existed between the Crown and the Vampire Council, which seeks equality under the law for vampires in Bereny, comes as the King has officially accepted an invitation from VC member Baron Vladimir Tepes to visit his castle and estate. The self-styled Baron’s estate lies outside the borders of Bereny in the Spirit Mountains.

However the King’s decision has raised a storm of protest, most notably from the religious order Dei Vigilare whose overt opposition to the Vampire Council is well known.

Finally however the High Priest has broken his silence on the subject and released a carefully-worded statement which, while not directly critical of the King, makes clear that the official position of the Church is that vampires should be destroyed.

“We advocate that the body of a vampire must be destroyed so as to free the soul trapped within. By doing this, the natural order of life and death is restored as Bethseline would have it,” said High Priest Morgut in his statement. “Even those who retain their sense of self are corrupted simply by their continued existence in this state and the acts they must commit to do so.”

“All of Gods' Vigilant raise their voices in support of the position on this matter eloquently set forward by His Grace, the High Priest of Bereny,” commented Baron Amdrel Gettleman, Dei Eligere of the Dei Vigilare, in response, though subsequently he made it clear that he would not encourage his members to oppose the will of the King in this matter.

The Vampire Council repeated again their assertion that they are as much servants of the Gods of Light as any other who accepts the Gods and the laws of Bereny, and for them to remain outside the protection of the law was unjust.
