VAMPIRE COUNCIL LEADER CONVICTED OVER RELM SYMBOL

Dateline: 12-09-517

The Leader of the Vampire Council, Countess Cambion Winterfall, has been convicted and sentenced by the King for wearing an unholy symbol of Relm, the dark god of greed, in contravention of the King’s edict against public display of symbols of the Dark Gods.

The symbol is a plain silver oval, said to represent the open mouth of the ever-hungry dark god, and is reputed to grant its wearer such things as better health and improved sexual prowess. Countess Winterfall was spotted wearing it by a sharp-eyed dwarf adventurer.

In answering the accusation, Countess Winterfall admitted wearing the symbol but insisted she had only done so in the interests of research and in an attempt to defeat the Relm cultists active in the Pits of Poldoon. “I regret to have been caught up in this situation, especially with our continuous crusade to try and be accepted as citizens of Bereny. However, I do accept full responsibility for this error of judgment,” she responded.

In his judgement the King seemed inclined to accept this plea as mitigation of the offence, but not forgive it entirely. “I am prepared to show a small degree of lenience since you are newly returned to the light, and will not have you Outlawed. Instead you will be thrown into the deepest dungeon of Crownheart Palace for a period of thirty days. In view of your undead status you will be left to rot without food, water or other means of sustenance. When and if you emerge I trust you will be suitably chastened.”

The King continued “Ignorance of the law is no excuse. One in your precarious position, existing from day to day on the tolerance and forbearance of the Crown and your fellow adventurers, should have had the sense to avoid unholy items like the metaphorical plague. You have done yourself and your cause no good at all.”

However not everyone was inclined to be so forgiving of the Countess’ offence, and it has lead many to question whether vampires can ever truly be trusted.

In particular, it has angered the Lord Crusader of Shanna, Lady Faile, whose order has a particular hatred of undead. “This clearly shows the contempt in which vampires hold both Church and Crown”, she announced. “Any Crusader who lays to rest this abomination, as they are already legally entitled to do, will have my full support.”
