NEW LEADER TAKES OVER CHILDREN OF RAGNAROK

Dateline: 5-7-517

It has been announced that Boldar of the Wolf Clan has been chosen to assume the leadership of the Children of Ragnarok, the Guild which represents the interests of people from the Southern Glaciers, or Vanihiem as they call it, in the Kingdom.

The announcement was marked by widespread celebrations by Glacier folk throughout Bereny, and CoR Guildhouses in dungeon courtyards everywhere resounded with toasts to the new leader and songs extolling his deeds until well into the next day.

However Boldar himself is far from the celebrations, as he is one of the leaders of an attempt by the CoR and the Glacier People in general to solve the mystery of what they call the ‘Great Column’ - the Ice Fortress which has caused so much disquiet in the Southern Glaciers since it rose from the depths of the ice a few years ago.

Fragmented reports from the expedition suggest that it has found the fortress inhabited by Glacier Giants - Boldar himself described it as a ‘weird place’. “Big Glacier soldiers! Big clubs!

Big rooms.”

Boldar succeeds the near-legendary Sven Hammerhand, and has therefore a substantial reputation for alcoholic excess to live up to. Sven was reported to have been on his way to the Risen Fortress but vanished en route, and it is feared that he must have fallen victim to one of the many dangers inherent in travel in the Ice Lands.

There are rumours that the first choice of the CoR as his replacement was actually Olaf Warmaker, another leader of the Risen Fortress expedition, but that this choice was vetoed by the Glacier clans, possibly because he was considered to have too close a connection with the Berenian establishment, or possibly because Boldar is reputed to have near-supernatural powers of endurance in the wilds of the Glaciers, an ability which most of the Glacier Folk hold in high esteem. However Olaf is a close comrade of Boldar’s and it is expected that he may well turn out to be influential as an adviser to the new leader.

One of Boldar’s first actions was to call for Glacier Barbarian adventurers to make their way south to join the attack on the Risen Fortress, and to encourage Glacier Folk among the adventuring community to join the Guild, one of whose stated aims is to promote the people of the Glaciers as a united, strong and intelligent people dedicated to the destruction of evil.

Meanwhile, Prince Dickon, Berenian Earl of the Southern Glaciers, is believed to be well on his way to the Risen Fortress himself, with a powerful retinue, to ensure that Bereny’s claim of overlordship of Vaniheim isn’t forgotten. His first meeting with the new head of the CoR may be an interesting event.
