A BERENY BUGLE EXCLUSIVE

THE CASTLE OF LORD LEXOR

A Special Report from the Brokenlands

by reporter Andrew Gilligan

Dateline: 9-1-517

I am standing in the barren and desolate plains of the Brokenlands, far to the west of Bereny, where the radiation storms light up the night sky. It is here that the Wooden Horse appeared when it disappeared from the Forests near Poldoon, carrying within it some of the most famed adventurers in the land, and this reporter.

Within the ‘head’ of the Horse was an alter-like panel covered with various flashing lights and buttons. When adventurers tried experimentally pushing a few of these buttons, there was a load groaning noise that reverberated throughout the structure, it shook violently, and then all the lights on the alter abruptly went dead. When some of those in the lower levels looked out of the entry hatch, it was clear that we were no longer in Bereny.

Most of those transported here are members of the Walkers on the Edge, that famous guild of thrill-seeking adventurers whose exploits are legendary. Among them is Baron Marcus D'Alembert, the leader of the Walkers, and he rapidly organised an exploration of the surrounding area, convinced that the Horse had not come here by chance and that it may perhaps have returned to its origin. The most obvious thing visible was the towers of a grim and foreboding castle on the horizon, so it was to here that Baron Marcus lead his followers. According to an inscription above the entry archway, the castle is called Castle Lexor.

I have not personally entered the castle, as I have been warned that the interior is filled with many dangerous undead monsters. Mind you it isn’t that safe out here either, and as I write this I can see a dragon in the distance (a small one admittedly). Fortunately a skald of the glacier people, Ginni Truthspeaker, has stayed here to escort me and ensure my safety, and she is carrying the largest axe I think I have ever seen.

I am told that the great hall of the Castle is decorated with tapestries depicting events from Bereny’s recent history, all featuring the heroic feats of one powerful Crusader lord. Baron Marcus described it as “something of a monument to self-deceit and self-congratulation”. Coupled with the name of the castle, one can’t help but wonder whether these are a reference to the Lord Lexor who was the former Lord Crusader of Selador until he was outlawed for murder and subsequently killed a few years ago. Could the Order of Selador have built this castle?

More worrying yet, the latest reports from within the castle speak of Baron Marcus and his fellow Guild members encountering a powerful undead monster wearing the crown of a Berenian Duke. Could this truly be some lost Duke of Bereny cursed with undeath and now holding macabre court out here in the Brokenlands?

Although I remain trapped here in the Brokenlands surrounded by terrifying monsters and cut off from Bereny (it is only through the services of the Walkers that I am able to send this report), at least I have the comfort of knowing that I am in the company of some of Bereny’s mightiest heroes. Ironically some of them are vampires, and their service to the Kingdom here may do much to further the efforts to rehabilitate the reputation of such in the Kingdom that seemed to be underway when I left. It is the ‘White Lady’, Alethea Sidhe, one of the most notorious vampires in the kingdom, who has lead the attack on the undead Duke.

Using the same means as he used to send you this report, Baron Marcus has sent a private report to the Regent, in the hope that he may be able to send us help or reinforcements. The Order of Selador might also be interested to learn about what we have found here.

Your reporter will continue to do his best to stay alive so he can bring you further updates on events in Castle Lexor.
