MOONWARD NOBLE DEMANDS PERMISSION TO CUT DOWN GREAT FOREST

By Robert Capa, Torlia Correspondent

Dateline: 1-11-518

Leading Moonward noble Baroness Sophia d’Agrillac has asked the Crown for permission to start clearing the Great Forest from the area around her estate, citing the need to create a security zone to prevent monsters from using the cover of the forest to sneak up to her estate fence unseen.

Baroness Sophia’s estate, Kerak Falcone is the most north-westerly in Bereny and has come under particular threat from the large numbers of undead operating in the north. There have been casualties among the inhabitants of the estate from the undead menace.

Baroness Sophia has also asked that the Crown extend the Kingdom’s road network to the remote mining village of Tinton, which lies between Kerak Falcone and the city of Torlia. Baroness Sophia has described how the inhabitants are starving as a result of their village being cut off in the hills, although in the experience of this reporter Tinton’s mineral wealth means that it is a frequent destination for merchants.

However the nature guild the Terin'Sha has strongly opposed the Baroness’ requests, denouncing them as irresponsible. “It is far to easy to despoil the wilderness with few considerations at restoring it”, said its spokesperson, the leprechaun Yul Herman. “The wilderness has been despoiled enough.”

Elven Baroness Glaze Fierien, whose sister Baroness Siriah has recently made much of her efforts to reforest the Fierien estate near Poldoon, was also critical, and urged the Crown to turn down the request.

As an alternative, Yul Herman urged Baroness Sophia to invest in the estate’s perimeter defences, although another estate owner, Baroness Solas, pointed out that the skills required to substantially fortify estate borders by adding stonework to perimeter defences are lacking in the workforce.

This follows other recent criticism of the Crown for allowing the area around Crownheart to be blighted by unrestrained commercial growth. So far, the Crown has shown no inclination to accede to the Baroness’ requests.
