WEIRD WEATHER IN

WESTERN FROSTWARD

Dateline: 01-03-519

The area around the fortress city of White Citadel is experiencing an unprecedented outbreak of freak weather, unlike anything its citizens have seen before.

Although the people of White Citadel are well used to extreme weather conditions, they have experienced one of the harshest winters in living memory, with communications cut off for months on end by unrelenting heavy snowfalls. The near continuous snowstorms have been accompanied by bizarre thunderstorms featuring bolts of strange purple lightning. “I’ve almost forgotten what daylight looks like”, one concerned resident told the Bugle.

The region already has problems because of the ongoing outbreak of ‘snow plague’, and one positive outcome of the weather is that with no-one able to travel there have been hardly any new cases of plague reported since last year. There has also been hardly any communication with the Glacier Folk living further south in the Glaciers proper, and so no news of the impact the plague has had on them.

There is a widespread belief that the freak weather has some unnatural cause, creating a profound nervousness in the populous. Some have suggested that it must be the first symptom of the weakening of the magical ‘weave’ about which the Crown is so concerned that they have banned the use of teleport magic.

One reason to suspect an unnatural cause for the storm clouds is that they appear to remain stationary over a fixed point instead of moving with the wind. The point around which they seem to revolve is marked on the ground by an ancient stone citadel in the snow-covered mountains near the city. The Crown authorities have asked for adventurers to volunteer to travel to this abandoned ruin and investigate it, now that approaching spring has at least reduced the amount of snow to the point that reaching it is possible.

Meanwhile food prices in White Citadel have started to rise as supplies are starting to run short.
