PETITION CALLS FOR BAN ON EVIL GOD SYMBOL

Dateline: 26-10-515

A petition has been launched to demand that the Regent outlaw the wearing of so-called unholy symbols of the evil god Relm, the Lord of Greed.

The symbols, which are in the form of a silver oval to represent the ever-hungry mouth of the evil god, are claimed by some to bestow upon their wearers all sorts of benefits including greater endurance, protection from magical attack, resistance to the common cold, and increased sexual prowess. They are said to be made by the notorious Crusaders of Relm in secret ceremonies rumoured to involve human sacrifice.

The latest move to get wearing of the symbols banned has been lead by Lady Abbi Selas, the deputy leader of The Way of the Five Paths. “We are talking about displaying the official symbol of an openly violent enemy of the State,” said Lady Abbi. “Remember that the Antitheticals are directly attacking Bereny. Those who wear these items should now be considered traitors to Bereny and should be treated as such.”

Lady Abbi cites reports that wearing of Relm symbols has become widespread among estate farmers on certain Estates.

When the question of use of these symbols was last placed before the Regent three years ago, he refused to outlaw them. ”In general, items dedicated to the dark gods should not be used”, the Regent is quoted as declaring at that time, “but this is a matter for the individual conscience of the user, since only the user will ultimately be harmed. I do not believe that the law should force men to do what is right. I will encourage it, but I will not make it the law.”

Lady Abbi, who is herself a priestess of the Six, was highly critical of the Church’s lack of support in her campaign. “It is time for our religious leaders to show some backbone and lead us in this great time of need. It is time for both the regent and the church to make a ruling on these items and outlaw their use - anything else is to give in to the evil that they represent!”

“The Holy Mother Church has already indicated its' disapproval of the use of these wicked items, and would approve of the equipping of such items being an outlawing offence,” responded High Priest Morgut. “However, the Regent has disagreed with the Church, as he does at times. I wonder what else you expect me to do.“

There are even reports that the Regent has received a letter purporting to be from Relm himself, which claims that the Dark God gains no benefit from people wearing the symbols, although it is almost certainly a hoax.

THEATRE FANS MOURN FOR DEATH OF STAGE STAR

Dateline: 31-10-515

Bereny’s thespian community have been paying tribute to The Fair Lady Gertie, who is reported to have been killed while adventuring in the lower levels of the Torlian Catacombs this week. Gertie is best known for starring opposite Sir Roger of Meadowbrook in the original production of Dimchurch Weatherstock’s famous tragedy ‘The Death of Sir Roger’.

Fellow actor Wartyconk the Thespian Troll, who has appeared in a several other Weatherstock productions, said of his erstwhile colleague, “She trod the boards elegantly and with no little distinction.”

Sir Roger himself has become notoriously reclusive in recent years and rarely appears in public, but his theatrical agent released a statement expressing his condolences.

After the success of ‘The Death of Sir Roger’ Gertie went on tour with the Crownheart Repertory Amateur Players (C.R.A.P.), but after a couple of years of travelling round Bereny in a theatre wagon, she turned to a career as an adventurer instead. There have always been rumours that before taking to the stage she had a previous career as a professional assassin, and she has recently offered instruction in assassination skills to other adventurers.

CRISIS IN THE GLACIERS

Dateline: 5-11-515

Rumours are rife in Winterward that there is a crisis in the Southern Glaciers. Reports indicate that the homeland of the Glacier Barbarians has been invaded by an unknown enemy, which some reports identify as being ice trolls. However, no-one seems entirely clear what the nature of the threat is.

Sven Hammerhand, the leader of the Children of Ragnarok, the Glacier Barbarian guild in Bereny that represents the views of the scattered barbarian clans, has been unavailable for comment. All over Bereny Glacier Barbarian’s have been hurriedly travelling south, or using the mystical power of their CoR helm to teleport to some unknown location.

There has inevitably been speculation that this crisis is linked to the current invasion of Bereny from the north by the Goblins.

COUNCIL OF GUILDS REFORMS

Dateline: 9-11-515

The Bereny Bugle has learnt that the Council of Guilds has reconvened in Crownheart. The Council last met over six years ago, and its re-creation is being seen as a reaction to the current crisis in the Kingdom.

The first indications that the Council was back in business was when lights were seen burning late at night in the Council building, which has been unused since the old Council was dissolved. This was accompanied by a lot of activity involving official messengers. However confirmation came when Runemaster Gimli Ruddle, leader of the dwarven Runeforge Guild, mentioned the Council while visiting a bar opposite the Council building.

“I think that his exact words were ‘Council of Guilds, my arse’”, barman Herbert Beerpump told our reporter. “He came in here, slammed the door behind him, ordered 4 quart-sized tankards of Stonebreaker, and then downed them all one after the other. Then he said something like ‘Right, better get back before they totally loose contact with reality’, and stalked back out again.

In its previous incarnation the Council was instrumental in bringing about the downfall of the demon-worshipping DNA Guild, but it broke up after bitter recriminations in the aftermath.

The new Council follows a recent call from Baron Stryker of the White Tower for greater guild co-operation, and it must be assumed that the reborn Council has emerged from this initiative. However at least some of the Guild leaders must be attending by magical means as many of them are in Moonward fighting the Goblins, and at least one, Baron Stryker himself, is outside the borders of the Kingdom.

CENTAUR BARRED FROM PASSENGER WAGON

Dateline: 11-11-515

The Ragged Rock Wagon Company has been accused of discriminating against centaurs after refusing passage to a centaur en route to King Slime’s Keep. Jancis Goldmane, a member of the Centaur Council and one of the entourage of Duchess Juliette, recounts how she and a Derwentian friend went to the wagon station at Ragged Rock, intending to catch a wagon eastwards towards King Slime’s Keep.

“I went to the Ragged Rock Wagon Station with my elderly friend, Sir Jaromir of Praha, who is very slow on his pins these days, and really does need me to help him get anywhere. I thought the Ticket Clerk smirked a bit when Sir Jaromir dismounted, as the notices on the Station wall said he should, and then we paid for 2 tickets.  Then we sat there happily chatting away for the rest of the day, wondering how tough it would be in King Slime's Keep. Then, much to my huge annoyance, I was refused entry to the wagon, and poor old Jaromir ending up at Silver Chalice Station on his own, twiddling his thumbs and waiting for me.”

A spokesman for the RRWC told us “Our policy is very clear and well known. Our wagons do have facilities to transport animals, but for the safety and comfort of our passengers we must exclude equines, and this includes centaurs.”

“It’s not good enough,” Jancis told us. “If their policy is indeed to maximise space in their blooming wagons, because I might take up more than one human seat (and there was no-one else waiting for a seat on that wagon), then they should not take my gold under false pretences. I am demanding a refund of the cost of my ticket, and an apology for not warning me before I bought it, and substantial compensation for hurt feelings! How dare they refer to me merely as an "equine", after the event. This is flagrant profiteering by the Wagon Companies, at the expense of us Centaurs.”

“Our staff perform a job, which in these times of war is an essential public service, and is both difficult and dangerous, and I think that they deserve the public’s support” RRWC’s spokeman told us. “Besides, didn’t I read somewhere that centaurs are all evil monsters anyway.”
