REBEL BARON KILLS HOSTAGE BUT ESCAPES OUTLAWING

Dateline: 6-4-516

By Bob Woodward, Torlia Correspondant

The Royal Courts have issued Bans of Outlaw on all the soldiers and henchmen of the self-styled ‘Baron’ Uryen d’Agrillac, even against his personal dancing troupe, for treason. However one name is conspicuous by its absence - that of Uryen d’Agrillac himself! Instead, in what seems to have been a spectacular administrative blunder by the Clerks of the Court, the rightful Baroness of the Falcone Estate, Baroness Sofia d’Agrillac, has been outlawed. Only the Estate farmers seemed to have escaped condemnation, although the Estate’s Reeve, Commius Legitus, is among those outlawed.

Meanwhile the Royal Army seems to be drawing up for an assault of the estate. This reporter counted eleven companies of Royal Army Infantry assembling beyond the edge of the Estate. Also present behind this Royal Army cordon was a company of Derwentian Dwarven slave-soldiers.

In response to the Royal Army buildup, a messenger from Uryen d’Agrillac delivered a package to the commander of the company nearest to the Estate gates, addressed to ‘The Usurper’. This proved to contain a severed human head and a letter, which claimed that the head belonged to one of the hostages, named as Cynan ap Sion, and that Uryen had ordered his execution, It continued that his son Moren would be executed as well if the Royal Troops did not withdraw.

The leaders of the IGW, Way of the 5 Paths, and RGA have all ordered their members in the vicinity to give any available assistance to the Crown forces. The Dei Eligere of the Dei Vigilare, Dese Sanberligne, has called on the Royal Courts to issue an immediate clarification on the outlaw status of Uryen. “Some among Gods' Vigilant have the traitor in sight, and it would be intolerable if the administrative failure to properly assign Outlaw status to Uryen should in any way be of legal consequence in the eyes of The Royal Courts should certain events transpire between now and when this administrative error is officially corrected”, she said.

It is understood that Uryen has made other threats to kill his hostages if any attempt is made to attack the estate, which he is describing as ‘the Autonomous Province of Falkonia’.

Abbott Christian deBarbarac of the nearby Lichtenstein Abbey, who had previously made an offer of sanctuary to Uryan, has now withdrawn his offer but extended in instead to the inhabitants of the Falcone Estate, including any of Uryen’s outlawed followers, if they will abandon his cause.

Meanwhile Baroness Sophia is said to be in hiding, in case assassins sent by her uncle take advantage of her not having the protection of the law.

THE EMPEROR IN CRIMSON HAS BEEN DESTROYED

Dateline: 7-4-516

The terrible evil entity known as the Emperor in Crimson, which has brought terror to the vicinity of Poldoon, is no more. Eyewitnesses report that a torrent of blood suddenly burst forth from all its orifices, and it collapsed and died.

“Myself and Baroness Glaze were next to the Emperor in Crimson, where she and I have been determinedly but vainly trying to hack away at his form,” reported Sharra Goldoak of the Walkers on the Edge, “when suddenly he belched violently and blood spewed from his eyes, his ears, his mouth. The area around him was drenched thick. He slumped to his knees, screamed in terrible agony, and then he was dead. The Emperor in Crimson is now no more than a gooey mess on the floor of the forest here.”

Although few were as close to the creature as Sharra and Baroness Glaze, all who saw this agreed that the Emperor had suffered no obvious injury to cause his sudden demise. However Dese Sanberligne, the Dei Eligere of the Dei Vigilare, was in no doubt. “The Emperor in Crimson was killed by actions taken within the secret chamber of King Slime' Keep,” she announced. “Victory to the Righteous!”. And it has been revealed that it was the Regent, Dirk Steadfast himself, who struck the final blow.

“The Regent and his companions found a hidden section under King Slime’s Keep containing three Emperor Crimson Shells and one Emperor Crimson Eye,” explained a press release from the Office of the Regent. “They destroyed the Eye, and immediately afterwards the shells vanished, and the Emperor himself died. And just for the record, although it was very much a team effort by all involved, technically it was the Regent who killed the Emperor in Crimson, as it was he who struck the killing blow against the Crimson Eye.”

“Apparently, according to my necromantic friend Armena, the Emperor in Crimson that we could see was basically nothing more than an indestructible magical construct; so we were never going to be able kill or damage it,” explained Sharra Goldoak. “She is rather annoyed that all her efforts to drain the life force of the Emperor in Crimson were for naught. Maybe we will never know exactly what killed the Emperor, but nevertheless the threat I hope is finally ended.”

Others however have been remembering the mysterious ‘third force’ mentioned in documents captured from King Slime’s forces, and wonder if the threat is truly over. “I am not yet ready to say the fight is over,” said Lady Jasmine, Lord Crusader of Shanna. “What of the third 'gauntlet' to be dropped? We need to be vigilant still!”

NEW MURDER ATTEMPT ON TEMPESTRA ESTATE

Dateline: 13-4-516

The Tempestra family are in fear that they are being targeted by unknown assassins after an attempt on the life of Baroness Kei Tempestra on the grounds of her estate. This follows the murder last year of her cousin Baron Kel Tempestra, to whose title she succeeded, also struck down by an unknown assailant.

The Baroness was attacked while inspecting the estate grounds, and seriously wounded. She was saved by the quick response of Sir Samson Highborn, an estate knight, who rushed to her assistance only to himself be greviously wounded when her attacker turned on him. However the commotion also attracted estate farmer Garrion Flamebrow, who was planting crops nearby, and he struck the attacker dead.

"I got this ‘ere wooden club that I carry in the fields with me, in case of any trouble, like," said the courageous farmer. "So I holds it up and says to matey-boy 'You better leave my guvnor alone, right, or I'll ‘ave you.' An then he goes an comes at me with this big 'ol knife in his hand - not a word or nothing. So I taps him on the head with it, and down he goes like a sack o'taters."

Both Baroness Kei and Sir Samson have now recovered from their wounds, but still have no idea who their attacker was. He was not wearing any of the equipment commonly associated with the Kyrian 'Hyuserik' assassin sect (such as their trademark embroidered pantaloons). However rumours have reached the Bugle that there is a new Berenian organisation of assassins in existence calling itself the Non-Royal Guild of Assassins, and it is feared that it may be behind these attacks. However the mystery remain as to who might wish to send assassins to kill the Barons of the Tempestra estate.

CRUSADER DESCRIBES HOW SHE ESCAPED FELINE FURY

Dateline: 23-4-516

A Crusader of Shanna has described her terrifying encounter with a pack of murderous moggies, and how she barely escaped with her life.

As previously revealed by the Bereny Bugle, Sorsha was attacked by a pack of over 100 domestic cats while on the McDunk estate in Moonward. Baron Alex McDunk had trained the cats to attack intruders as a defence against goblin marauders, but was unable to prevent them from directing their furry fury on the unfortunate crusader, who said that she had only entered the estate grounds as a shortcut to the Enchanted Forest.

“I did notice some cats but paid them no mind,” said Sorsha. “Suddenly I was covered by furry forms clawing at me. I fought back and slew a couple, but they kept coming. My armour blessed with the protection of Shanna resisted their talons, but my boots and gauntlets are only the stuff of mortal men and soon my feet and hands had been torn to rags. I fled but the ocean of fur pursued and I felt my life slipping away. Then miraculously I felt myself enveloped in a strange magical power which flooded my body with energy and vitality.”

Fortunately for Sorsha it would seem that Baroness Paula McDunk was more inclined to intervene than her husband, and used her magical abilities to save the Crusader. However she had to magically revive Sorsha once more before the Crusader finally reached a safe distance from the estate and the cat horde ceased to pursue her. “Only when the screeching and yowling was no more did I stop and nourish myself on manna bread, glad to be alive,” said Sorsha.

The incident has lead to calls from animal welfare charities for the Crown to impose controls on estates allowing large populations of feral cats to roam their lands uncared for.
