BID TO OPEN ROAD TO FRONTIER

Dateline: 25-07-515

Although it is known that there is a land route from Bereny to the jungle-shrouded land of Frontier, far to the east, the difficulties and dangers of the route have prevented anyone from exploring and mapping it, and living to tell the tale. However all this looks set to change as a joint White Tower - Black Tower expedition is being formed to finally open up the route.

“There's a lot of money to be made in trade of goods between the two lands, but first the route must be properly established by adventurers. By all accounts as you go east the terrain gets more difficult and the wildlife increasingly dangerous,” Tobias Hyde of the Trade Association ITOBA told the Bugle.

“Due to our combined interests in Bereny and the Frontier the Guild of the White Tower have decided to establish a mission to map the journey,” declared a communique from the White Tower issued jointly by Baron Ephraim Stryker, the Lord Commander of the White Tower (currently in Kyr) and his kinsman Lord Gabriel Stryker, the Mayor of Bordertown, the principle Berenian outpost in Frontier.

“Our intention is to gather a small force at the town of Belmarney in the south-east of Bereny and at Bordertown in the north of the Frontier. These groups will enter the "road" from both directions and aim to meet at the mid-point of the journey. It is our hope that this will allow the Kingdom access to the riches and resources of this new land whilst allowing experienced and well-equipped adventurers to more easily reinforce the fragile Berenian outposts in the Jungles. It is certain that the mission is not for the faint-hearted. It is likely to take many years to fully conduct the exploration and for many who begin to perish before the final outcome. We therefore welcome any adventurer, independent or Guild affiliated, to make themselves known so we can coordinate the enterprise to the benefit of all.”

To this end, the WT seem to have established a mutual co-operation agreement with the Black Tower, who are said to be already exploring the area east of Belmarney.

GOBLIN HORDES OVERRUN THE NORTH

Dateline: 25-07-515

All of Bereny continues to reel in shock in the face of the Goblin Invasion. Following the destruction of Meadowbrook, refugees have been pouring south into Summer Ward, and the Goblins are now advancing upon Poldoon.

At least two estates in Moon Ward are reported to have been occupied by the armies of King Slime. One is to the west of Meadowbrook and has been identified as Guydrell's Keep. The other is reported to be south east of Meadowbrook. From both locations there are harrowing stories of farming hamlets burned and razed, and villagers massacred, and the Goblins have seized and fortified the Estate keeps to use as bases to raid further afield. “The Goblins have festooned the walls of the castle with the rotting corpses of the unfortunate peasantry,” one eyewitness reported.

Goblins have also been reported attacking travellers on the Great North Road in the vicinity of The Mines of Miasma, and raiding Estates north of Joballah. The greatest danger appears to be to Poldoon however, where the goblins have again attempted to use a ‘Massive weapon of Destruction’ against the city, similar to the one used to destroy the city of Meadowbrook. Only the the heroism of the IGW Enchantress Belanna Marluk, who single-handedly slew the Goblins manning the device and then held off determined attempts to recapture it by the Goblins until re-inforcements arrived, saved the city. In recognition of her actions, the Regent has appointed her to be a Baroness. “You are a credit to your profession and your guild,” the Regent told her in his statement.

However the new Baroness was strongly critical of the Ducal authorities. “There is no sign of the Raven, the Duchess of Poldoon or any military units to protect the great city of Poldoon. I believe the Regent should consider the complacency shown by his military strategists,” she is reported to have told bystanders following her capture of the device.

Since then an army unit from Poldoon, the 1st Fierein Special Royals, has moved up to help secure the goblin Device. In a statement from the Duchess of Poldoon, it was described how they had defeated two companies of goblins, but had taken heavy casualties. “I am told that by my commanders that the goblins do indeed when they strike true, strike powerfully, dealing horrific blows to some of my troops. Nearly a whole half of the Unit are either dead or severely injured. The people of Fairie Glade paid a heavy price today but it is much more acceptable than what could have happened to Poldoon, which still stands proud.”

WHITE TOWER EXPANDS IN THE UNDERWORLD

Dateline: 26-07-515

The White Tower has been continuing to expand the presence of the Kingdom of Bereny in the Underworld, based on the settlement known as White Tower Island. In a press release from the White Tower, the WT’s Lord Commander Baron Ephraim Stryker describes how the settlement is now fully operational and fortified, and that increasing numbers of adventurers are starting to visit to use its facilities.

“In addition it appears that some adventurers are deciding to begin their careers at the settlement rather than in Dungeon Courtyards,” the Baron continues. “I would hazard a guess that the targeting of the Foundation Stones in the region to the settlement has already acted as a great boon to the folk who have entered the subterranean realms through the various access points that exist.”

Exploration of the surrounding area has revealed that the settlement lies at the northern end of a relatively small island separated from the rest of the Underworld by narrow channels to the south, west and east and by an unknown distance of much deeper water to the north.

The Tower has initiated contact with a number of the local inhabitants. “There are two fortified villages on the landmass,” said Baron Stryker, “which from the frightened descriptions of the villagers may indicate the closest known power may be the Mor As Kah realm.”

However not all the inhabitants are hostile. “We have begun to make contacts with several small bands of well-aligned Underworld inhabitants. The first of these have declared open alliance with the Tower and through us the Kingdom and we have accepted their leaders into our ranks as Honorary Knights. We are now in discussion with several other tribes,” said Baron Stryker. “It is our hope that by fostering the relations of these folk with ourselves and adding to their treasuries in the short-term we can forge strong links with groups that can become strong political and military allies within the Underworld. It also feasible that other more powerful nations may come to view us as a potential friend rather than enemy and allow us to open channels of communications to the benefit of the Kingdom.”

But it would seem that this activity has attracted the enmity of some in the Underworld. The Bugle has learnt that last week many on White Tower Island were recipients of a mental message - “"Humans and their allies do not belong in the Underworld. Leave now or face the wrath of the Dark Legions. You have been warned. We are coming." Baron Stryker however was dismissive of the threat. “This response to our incursion has been anticipated. We will prepare for this ‘Dark Legion’ such as we can and repel it with maximum force.”

BERENIAN AMBASSADOR ARRIVES IN KYR

Dateline: 26-07-515

After a long journey through Poldoon Pass, Bereny’s new Ambassador to the Empire of Kyr, Baron Ephraim Stryker, is reported to be about to arrive in Rasaiad, the Kyrian city closest to Bereny.

Baron Stryker, who is also the Lord Commander of the White Tower, is carrying messages and gifts from the Regent to the rulers of Kyr. But already it would seem that the Baron’s mission has become bogged down in Kyr’s notoriously baroque and impenetrable politics.

The Baron initiated communications with Salmeki Hessina, Ra’is of Rasaiad (roughly equivalent to one of our Dukes) on his arrival at the Kyrian border and received permission to enter the Empire, and the Ra’is sent an official to the border to greet the Ambassador and escort him to Rasaiad.

However, members of his embassy say that Baron Stryker has grown concerned after the Ra’is declined his request to be furnished with an embassy building within the city, and that subsequent messages to the Ra’is have gone unanswered.

Meanwhile the Baron has received an invitation to proceed onwards to the City Of Splendours, Kyr’s capital city, and the home of the Empress of Kyr. This invitation has been made by Mustapha Jihad, Ra'is of the City of Splendours, and there is some concern that the Baron has allowed himself to become embroiled in a political feud between the two rival Ra’is.

It remains to be seen whether the Baron will receive an audience with the Empress Sulesse, who lives in seclusion in the Imperial Palace in the City of Splendours and is said by some commentators to be no more than a figurehead for various powerful nobles. However if Baron Stryker were to be turned away from the presence of the Empress, there are many who would construe this to be a calculated insult to the people of Bereny.
