MORE CLASHES BETWEEN D’AGRILLACS AND DERWENTIANS

- By Bereny Bugle Torlia Correspondent Bob Woodward

Dateline: 27-1-516

The Bereny Bugle has obtained eyewitness testimony to a recent incident in which a number of Derwentians of House Ossuary were attacked and killed by members of the retinue of  Baron Uryen D’Agrillac. According to the eyewitness, Baron Uryen personally lead the attackers and himself killed at least one of the Derwentians.

An edict from the Regent issued last year prohibited any attacks on Derwentian forces in Bereny without Crown sanction, following diplomatic protests from the Derwentian ambassador. After recent unconfirmed reports of clashes between Derwentian troops and D’Agrillac forces in the vicinity of Torlia, the Regent ordered an immediate end to any further hostilities, and threatened Baron Uryen with severe repercussions if he did not comply. “If it should transpire that the D'Agrillacs have been slaughtering our allies and doing their best to start a war, not only will Baron D'Agrillac be hung, drawn and quartered in front of his own estate gates, but I will personally see to it that the estate is removed entirely from his family's control,” the Regent declared in his recent Bereny Bugle interview.

This reporter saw the incident only from a distance, and was unable to discern any details of what transpired, but has personally spoken to an eyewitness who claims to have “seen everything”. This witness is a Priest of the Six, who has asked to remain anonymous out of concern that some unfortunate previous associations, which have left him physically and mentally scarred and with only one arm, might be held against him.

The incident occurred inside the boundary of the D’Agrillac’s Falkcone estate. As the estate is surrounded by watchtowers and a particularly high and strong fence, the Derwentians must have known that they were trespassing. The witness described how the Derwentians were “slaughtered to a man”, with Baron Uryen personally leading the attack, and that afterwards the Baron stood over the their strewn corpses surveying the scene to ensure that there were no survivors.

The Baron’s actions, so soon after being explicitly ordered by the Regent to cease his attacks on the Derwentians, seems to be a direct challenge to the authority of the Crown. It has also attracted the attention of other Derwentians, with sinister messages threatening revenge having appeared.

House Ossuary are widely considered the second most powerful faction in Derwent and are particularly associated with control of Derwent’s trading network.

According to the witness, he has not reported the incident to the Crown, but has notified ‘the appropriate Church authorities’.

A spokesperson for the Baron, estate reeve Cimmius Legitas, told the Bugle “It is not a crime to slay Derwentians, or other non-citizens. It is a crime to practice Demonology. The Raven of Ghorst admitted to summoning a Demon (or similar entity not from this dimension) and was rewarded with the Duchy of Poldoon, rather than punished for his crimes, and is being protected in this by the Regent.”

GLACIERS MYSTERY DEEPENS AFTER NEW RUMOURS

Dateline: 29-1-516

Unconfirmed rumours continue to sweep Bereny’s southern provinces about a crisis in the land of the Glacier Barbarians. The latest rumours to emerge from the south speak of a mysterious fortress rising up out of the snow and ice of the Glaciers, although the rumours are unclear as to whom the fortress might belong.

However there is a legend circulating in Frostward that many years ago a fortress appeared from the ice, and that the Elders of some of the Barbarian tribes entered it and made a pact with some sort of strange creatures from another realm. The Barbarians themselves will not speak of the legend, apparently afraid that by even speaking of it they might cause the fortress to reappear and claim the souls of the descendents of those who made the pact. Whether or not the current crisis is related to this legend, it might explain why the Barbarians themselves are so afraid to speak of what is happening.

As previously reported by the Bugle, all over Bereny Glacier Barbarians are hastening back to their homeland to face the unknown crisis that is threatening it. “Am not smart about what is there,” admitted Glacier Barbarian Olaf Warmaker to our correspondent in Icehaunt. “We go to Great Column a ways south...to the snowfields I think. Heard about new ice roads, and report of big fort come out of the ice!. Boldar say to get ready to go.“

THE EMPEROR IN CRIMSON IS RISEN

Dateline: 3-2-516

Reports from Poldoon suggest that some sort of monstrous entity has emerged from the corpse of King Slime. Accounts are confused, but it would seem that this is the so-called ‘Emperor in Crimson’, the creature that was imprisoned within the Keep of King Slime, until set free by the goblin king.

An account of what happened was made by Sir Lucious Winters of the White Tower. “I witnessed the following upon the demise of King Slime - as he fell limply to the ground, choking out his dying breath, his cracking skin burst like a ripe fruit. From the husk of the fallen goblin’s body crawled something else - something huge, something horrible, something reeking of bile and death.”

According to accounts by Timothy the goblin (see this story) he and his fellows were charged with imprisoning some evil entity - the Emperor in Crimson - within what is now King Slime’s Keep. It would seem that this creature possessed the body of the goblin king, and now on his death it has manifested itself from his body just as the Reaper escaped from the body of Baroness Fierien. Exactly what the Emperor in Crimson is remains unclear however.

Those in the immediate vicinity of the monster now fear for their lives. Sir Lucious is reported as having complained that he stands “alone on the field of battle facing The Emperor In Crimson, whilst the great and good of the Kingdom flee. I will no doubt not survive the coming conflict and to be quite honest I'm a tad annoyed.”

However Sir Lucious would not seem to be completely alone. “The Emperor in Crimson is immune to cold damage; he had the gall to simply shrug off every blast thrown at him by my leech life sprite,” reported the necromancer Tyrannis of the Black Tower. “Some extradimensional hell demons just have no sense of fun. My companion, the greater vampire Erith DeLencre, has indicated that she will return to duel with the Emperor in Crimson as she did King Slime; perhaps this time, Glaze the Fearless might actually close with him somewhat earlier than she did Slime.”

DARK CENTAUR TERROR MEETS ITS MATCH

Dateline: 6-2-516

The trio of powerful Dark Centaurs which have recently been terrorising Homeward seem to have met their match. Two of the monsters have been slain by a monk called Malachai, and latest reports are that the monk is now locked in mortal combat with the third and last of them.

Miss Suzanne von Lekula, a Crownheart-based trader, described how one of her wagons came under attack from the Dark Centaurs as it journeyed towards Lionel. “They have ran that route quite a few time with only encountering the normal types of wildlife, but this time they were ambushed by two of the Black Centaurs, leaving my wagon driver and both the guards that were with him close to death. They were actually quite lucky to get away.”

“My guards repaired the wagon and then headed down into Swinderlog courtyard to get more healing supplies in case there were further attacks. That is where this monk named Malachai saw them battered and bruised, and offered his assistance.  From what I understand, he has already killed two of them and now stands toe to toe with the final one that arrived to join the others. I am thankful that he helped and should probably send him a reward.”

As previously reported, the trio of monsters had been roaming the area for a while, attacking travellers and isolated settlements, and there are unconfirmed reports of them stealing human children in order to devour them. What is not in doubt is that they are very tough and fast, and that news of their destruction would be very welcome to everyone living in the vicinity of Lionel.

In related news, the Centaur Council reports in its latest news release to have slain Noir, the presumed leader of the Dark Centaurs in Homeward, in his underground lair near Crownheart. “Noir the Undead Centaur was killed by a combination of bow-fire and Enchanter damage, but his body disappeared leaving no traces,” the Centaur Council claimed, but is continuing its exploration of the lair in the belief that Noir may not truly be dead after all. “We assume we will encounter him at a later date, and then wonder how many times we will need to kill him before he stays dead,” Council Leader Chaldan Ironhoof is quoted as saying in the press release.
